The Real Unreal at Meow Wolf Grapevine

Yesterday, we took a family trip to Grapevine to check out an interactive art exhibit at Meow Wolf. I hadn’t heard of it until recently, but from the few photos I saw, I thought it would be worth the price of admission—and we were not disappointed.

Meow Wolf has six locations across the country, and the Grapevine exhibit is one of two in Texas. Each location has its own theme and backstory. This one is called The Real Unreal, and it tells the story of a family who disappeared from their house. You explore the house in an open-ended adventure, checking out a massive amount of interactive art pieces. I hadn’t seen anything like it before. If you want, you can look for clues to discover what happened to the family. Our 8-year-old daughter was too captivated by the visuals to play detective, so we just explored the space for close to two hours.

The artwork and interactive elements were really well done. I was particularly enthralled by the area called Lamp Shop Alley. I have a definite fondness for vintage advertising signs, especially neon, and this area had plenty of that. I also love that they provide individualized credits for everyone who worked on the project, both online and at the venue.

We will return in the future when my daughter is a little older and wants to take a chance at unreaveling the mystery. With ticket prices around $50 per person, it’s not some place we would visit frequently, but it’s definitely worth going at least once.
